Job Description – Facilities Assistant
SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals

Reports to: Facilities Manager
Hours/Week: 20, including 4 hours each weekend
Wages: $20 per hour
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

The Organization
SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC is a safe, nurturing, affordable home for patients and their loved ones who travel to UNC Hospitals for life-saving procedures and serious illness. Open since 2008 the SECU Family House (Family House) provides support and respite for adult patients and their caregivers. With a recent expansion completed this year, Family House can now provide comfort to families in seventy-five guest rooms in two buildings.
Services are provided by a dedicated cadre of 1,000 volunteers and staff of thirty full and part time employees. Services include meals, transportation and supportive programs. Our House is open to guests 365 days a year and 24 hours a day.

The Position
The Facilities Assistant, with the facilities team, performs maintenance and repairs of physical structures of buildings and grounds, as well as performs preventative maintenance as directed by the Facilities Manager.

 Responsibilities
Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists the Facilities Manager as directed, in coordinated effort to maintain an attractive and safe building inside and out.
  • Inspects, repairs and services HVAC and environmental control systems
  • Inspects, repairs and services wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and controls
  • Inspects, repairs and services plumbing systems
  • Performs general repair of all areas of the building, including fixtures and furnishings
  • Recommends equipment and supply purchases for repairs and replacement
  • Assists others as requested, including moving furniture and unloading and storing supplies
  • Preps and paints marred walls to assure clean and neat appearance of interiors spaces
  • Performs general carpentry work in the creation of or repair of equipment, fixtures, and furniture
  • Abides by all State and Federal safety regulations including OSHA, EPA, MSDS and NEPA, as well as state regulations
  • Assists in preventative maintenance according to SECU Family House policies and procedures in order to assure the buildings and their contents remain operable and in good condition
  • Assists in the performance of Fire, Tornado, and other disaster drills as necessary to prepare staff and guests for an emergency and to satisfy the requirements of State Regulations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent personal and health information concerning guests
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential experience required
The candidate must be dependable and responsive, with a professional demeanor, a keen attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively under deadlines. We seek a candidate with a positive and collaborative attitude who values teamwork. In addition to a commitment to the mission of SECU Family House, the preferred candidate must have:

  • A High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience and/ or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Maintenance experience in hospitality or hospital industries is a plus.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English used in the workplace.
  • Physical demands for this position include sitting, standing, bending, walking, lifting, climbing ladders and moving up to 60 lbs.
  • Must have their own transportation, a valid NC drivers license and a good driving record (Will be driving Family House van.)
  • Must be available to work 4 hours each weekend and be responsive to emergencies when notified.
