Guest Spotlight - David and Christine Ryce
David and Christine Ryce, Family House Guests
Staff Sergeant David Ryce dedicated nearly 21 years of his life to the United States Marine Corps. Stationed in various places across the globe during his two decades of service, he lived with discipline, courage, and an unwavering commitment to his country.
He was enjoying retirement with his wife of 49 years, Christine, when he faced a new mission. In late 2022, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.
The news was blunt. His doctor didn’t sugarcoat it.
“Make your amends,” the doctor said. “Get your affairs in order.”
Devastated, David resolved with quiet determination:
“It will be in my time, not your time.”
That mindset — resolute and steadfast — carried David through months of treatment, including a bone marrow transplant in November 2023. Like many other transplant patients, David developed Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD), a serious complication that required ongoing treatment in New Bern every two weeks. His care teams worked together across cities to manage his health.
Eventually, David entered remission. Today, he returns to UNC Hospitals every two months for follow-up appointments. During those visits, SECU Family House has become a crucial part of his healing journey — for both him and Christine.
“It gave you a place to feel like you were home,” David says.
For Christine, Family House offered a calm retreat during a period of uncertainty. “Walking the trails and going to the Botanical Gardens helped relieve stress,” she says. “The House is very clean. You couldn’t ask for a better place. Like a home away from home. Willing to meet your needs and go the extra mile.”
Together, they found small moments of peace in a shared space — whether chatting with other guests at the same table, enjoying a music program, or unwinding by the fireplace.
And for David, knowing his wife had a safe, supportive place close to the hospital to stay brought a deep sense of relief.
“The shuttle just takes you right there,” he adds, “Love that shuttle — it makes it a whole lot easier.”
This Military Appreciation Month, we honor veterans like David — and their families — who continue to show strength in the face of life’s toughest battles. SECU Family House is proud to be part of their story.
