Community Garden Coming Soon!
Work is underway to create an oncology community garden at SECU Family House that will teach and inspire cancer patients and their caregivers to follow a plant-based diet. The garden is made possible by the generosity of the Datiles family in memory of the late Zeny Datiles, and in conjuction with dietitians from the UNC comprehensive cancer support program.
Under the guidance of the oncology dieticians and other volunteers, our guests will be encouraged to eat more fruits and vegetables, learn how to cook healthier, stay active, support the food insecure, and improve their physical and mental health throughout treatment. A plant-based diet is recommended by the American Institute of Cancer Research, and Zeny was a registered dietitian with UNC prior to her passing.
The grand opening of "Zeny's Garden" will be in late March, which is national nutrition month. The garden is located next to the gazebo, not far from the Family House kitchen, and learning workshops and volunteer opportunities will become available as the garden grows.
