A Day in the Life at Family House
No two days are ever the same at Family House. Each day takes a life of its own - and each day is nothing short of extraordinary.
This is Family House on a typical day:
6:00 a.m
The first pots of coffee are made. Dishwashers are emptied. Guests start trickling into the kitchen, preparing their breakfasts, making their lunches, having a quiet moment to themselves or a brief chat with a fellow guest. The first staff person arrives.
6:30 a.m.
Guests begin checking out or heading to UNC Hospitals for treatment.
8:00 a.m.
Sandra, our Supervising Housekeeper, arrives & begins organizing her work day. John, our Facilities Manager, goes through the day’s work requests.
9:00 a.m.
The first hospital shuttle arrives to take guests & patients to UNC Hospitals. Michele, the Manger on Duty for the day, arrives. Marsha & Carol also arrives for their front desk volunteer shift.
9:00-5:00
Rooms are cleaned, guests check in and check out, staff & volunteers work their shifts, keys are made, tours are given to new guests & potential volunteers
12:00 noon
Hotels are called, referring guests since we’re full again tonight.
12:45 p.m.
The staff takes a lunch break together.
2:00 p.m.
Kara & Kris are interviewed for a future Family House Diaries
3:00 p.m.
A couple of guests make cookies for our guests. Their recipe for oatmeal lace cookies is shared amongst them.
4:30 p.m.
Sherman, the evening manager, starts his shift. Anticipated arrivals are discussed as well as any pending issues.
6:00 p.m.
SECU Record Services prepares a yummy meal of spaghetti, salad & fresh-baked pies.
9:00 p.m.
Sherman closes the Intake Office for the night.
