Bridging The Gap: 2019-2020 Annual Campaign Results

The word that best describes the past year for Family House is flexibility. The first nine months of our fiscal year were met with success in so many different ways. We served large numbers of guests and our volunteer team and donors answered the call again and again. The House was abuzz with excitement over the expansion, and throughout construction, our daily operations didn’t miss a beat. With the help of our community of supporters, we were met with immense fundraising success.

Then, in March of 2020, like the rest of the world, COVID-19 became the almost sole focus of our organization. We worked with UNC Health, the Orange County Health Department, and our own Medical Advisory Committee to determine the best steps for Family House. To prevent viral transmission and actively safeguard the health of our guests, staff, and volunteers, Family House temporarily closed from April 1, 2020-May 31, 2020.

During the two months we were closed, expansion construction continued and the kitchen renovation began, moving forward at a rapid pace. We had a very successful Virtual Happy Hour, replacing our Family House Classic, and raised ¾ of the expected revenue at this new event. On June 1, 2020, our doors reopened to a limited number of guests, volunteers and staff and we continued to serve our guests for the remainder of the year. We all learned what it meant to be flexible.

As of June 30, 2020, $1,051,260.27 was raised in our annual fund through donations and event revenue to support our operating budget, exceeding our Bridging the Gap goal of $1 million. 1,070 volunteers donated 11,085 hours to keep Family House open and operating. Over 1,775 guests came from 87 counties in NC and 22 states in the ten months we were open.

Your support and belief in the mission of Family House helped us Bridge the Gap during these unprecedented times, and for that we are grateful. Join on our next journey as we anticipate the opening of our new expansion and the opportunity to fill our 75 rooms for the patients and caregivers who need us most. Thank you for staying with us during these trying times!
